About the Artist

Rose Monzyk is a multifaceted artist based in Washington, Missouri, known for her work in millinery, silk painting, and fine art. Her creations often blend traditional craftsmanship with wearable art, making her a distinctive figure in the regional art scene.

Millinery and Hat Design

Monzyk has been crafting hats for nearly 20 years, gaining recognition for her hand-blocked and hand-dyed pieces. Her designs have been featured multiple times at the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs, highlighting her prominence in the field. She utilizes materials such as wool felt, rabbit fur felt, various types of straw, and suiting fabrics.

Each hat is shaped using steam and embellished with elements like wool leaves, handmade roses, and netting. Monzyk emphasizes the importance of comfort and personal expression in her designs, stating, “You’ve got to feel marvelous”.

Silk Painting

Transitioning from oil painting, Monzyk taught herself the art of silk painting through experimentation. She begins by applying a water-based resist to outline her designs, which acts as a barrier for the dyes. Her inspiration often stems from colors and natural elements, particularly flowers. By varying dye concentrations and adding water, she achieves a range of hues and effects, resulting in vibrant, flowing designs on silk scarves and fabrics.

Artistic Philosophy and Community Engagement

Monzyk’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in her lifelong passion for fabric, texture, and color. Starting to sew at the age of seven, she has always been drawn to creating with her hands. Beyond her personal creations, she is actively involved in the artistic community, teaching and sharing her skills with others. Her work has been showcased in various galleries and art societies, reflecting her commitment to both her craft and community.
